Oland appeal

The Supreme Court of Canada heard legal arguments yesterday about when a convicted murderer should receive bail pending an appeal.

Dennis Oland’s lawyer say their client does not want to be haunted by the prospect of another unsuccessful bail hearing should his second murder trial take an unfortunate turn.

The Supreme Court justices questioned whether Oland being out on bail now makes the point moot; but interveners, including the attorneys-general of three provinces, say rules for such bail provisions must be clarified.
