Province to cancel Canaport tax deal
The provincial government is now cancelling the tax deal that allowed Canaport LNG to pay only half a million dollars a year in property taxes for the last decade…a tenth of what it should have.
The Telegraph-Journal reports legislation will be drafted next week to allow the city to collect a lot more in taxes.
New Conservative Leader Blaine Higgs, a former Irving Oil executive, said because it was the city that requested the change, he agrees with it.
Irving spokesman Andrew Carson said Irving Oil continues to respect the process to review the tax legislation and its outcomes…but he didn’t say whether the company plans to appeal any future property tax assessments.
