Council salaries reviewed

Common Council salaries will be reviewed by an external consulting firm.

Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary pointed out the by-law governing council salaries hasn’t been reviewed in over ten years. She told the Telegraph-Journal that doesn’t mean it’s a money grab…but that the bylaw has long out-used its usefulness.

The current by-law says the Mayor should be paid an annual salary of $38,000, with a $19,000 expense allowance. Councillors get a yearly salary of $12,666 and expenses of $6,333. The deputy mayor makes $3,000 more in salary and expenses.
